NATIVITY SCENE - NACIMIENTO

¡Por fin hemos puesto el nacimiento! Es el primer año que lo hacemos y ha sido todo un acontecimiento.

We just installed our first Nativity scene at home. It's a Spanish tradition in Christmas time, so it was quite an event.

En la imagen podéis ver el material que he usado: papel terciopelo verde y musgo natural para el paisaje, corteza de árbol para el pesebre, papel de aluminio para el río y una piedrecillas para crear un puente.

In the previous picture you can see all I used: some green velvet paper and natural moss for the landscape, bark for the crib, some aluminium foil for the river and a few stones to create a bridge.

To fix the bark plates and stick them to the green paper (the grass), I simply used some blue tack.

Hemos hecho unas felicitaciones de Navidad. Es una manualidad muy entretenida para hacer con los niños.
We just made some Christmas cards. It was a nice handcraft to do with my children.

Se necesitan unas tarjetas, tijeras, pegamento y algo para poner de relieve. Nosotros lo hemos hecho con estrellas de papel a las que hemos pegado una estrellita plateada, pero pueden ser figuras del belén, un pino...etc.
You need cards, scissors, glue and a decoration to stick to it. I chose a blue paper star on which we added a little silver star sticker. But it could be anything you like: a Xmass tree, a Nativity scene... etc.

Se hacen dos cortes en el pliegue de la tarjeta, como se ve en la imagen.
First, you must make 2 cuts on the fold of the card, as shown in the picture.

Se dobla hacia adentro y ya tenemos el soporte para pegar lo que queramos.

Hace tiempo, buscando en Etsy, encontré la tienda ManiMina y el patrón Little Mademoiselle Coat: me encantó. Por casualidad, tenía una tela de espiga marrón lana 100% y me pareció perfecta para esta prenda. Sólo tuve que comprar un poco de forro polar y ponerme manos a la obra.

Some time ago, sniffing arround in Etsy, I found a shop called ManiMina. Il loved the Little Mademoiselle Coat pattern. I happened to have this 100% wool fabric and I thought it would be perfect for this garment. I simply had to buy some fleece for the lining.

La labor ha resultado más fácil de lo que pensaba. El patrón está bien hecho y las instrucciones son muy claras; sin complicaciones. Así es que animo a cualquiera a lanzarse porque es un patrón muy agradecido.

The task was easier than I expected. The pattern is well done and instructions are clear, uncomplicated. So, I encourage you to do it: I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

En un lugar secreto, recóndito e inaccesible, guardo una caja "mágica" llena de cosas para hacer manualidades. Viene muy bien para los días de lluvia, o simplemente esos momentos en que no sabes cómo entretener a los niños. Siempre encuentras algo que hacer, cuando no hay nada que hacer.

In a secret place, out of reach, I hide a "magic" box with plenty of craft material. It's very useful in rainy days, or whenever you don't know how to keep your children busy. You always find something to do, when there's nothing to do.

En verano, los niños tienen mucho tiempo libre y hay que pensar en cosas que les entretengan. En este caso, os propongo una actividad divertida y muy creativa. ¡A los niños les encanta!

Children usually have a lot of spare time in summer and we need to fill the blanks to keep them busy. Here is a creative activity that's a lot of fun. They love it!

Ingredientes / Ingredients:

- Pintura de dedos - Finger paint

- Papel de embalar - Wrapping paper

- Cinta de carrocero - Masking tape

- Papel de periódico - Newspaper

- Agua - Water

- Telas/toallas viejas - Old towels/fabrics
- Delantales - Aprons

- Una pizca de paciencia - A pinch of patience

Pero primero... ¡A merendar! Al fondo se ve cómo preparé la pared. Con el papel de periódico, se protege el suelo y las zonas adyacentes. Luego, se coloca el papel de embalar con la cinta de carrocero y listo.

But first... a snack! You can see how I prepared the wall. You must protect the floor and adjacent parts (like the pipe) with the newspaper. Then, you can place the wrapping paper using the masking tape.

Coloca algo debajo de las pinturas para proteger el suelo. Necesitarás un cubo con agua para lavarse las manos al cambiar de color y una toalla vieja o un trapo para secarse.

Put something under the paints to protect the floor. You'll need a bucket with water so that they can wash their hands whenever they change colour, and an old towel or cloth.

VEAL CHEEKS IN RED WINE SAUCE - CARRILLERAS DE TERNERA AL VINO TINTO

Ingredientes para 5 personas - Ingredients for 5:

3 carrilleras grandes (ternera o buey) - 3 big veal/beef cheeks
3 cebollas grandes - 3 big onions
1puerro - 1 leak
1 hoja de laurel (opcional) - 1 bay leaf (optional)
1 hoja de gelatina (opcional) - 1 gelatin leaf (optional)
½ botella de vino tinto bueno - ½ good red wine bottle
Sal, pimienta aceite de oliva - Salt, pepper, olive oil

Limpiar bien las carrilleras, quitando todas las membranas que puedan tener. Cortar la cebolla en dados y rehogarla en el aceite, cortar el pimiento y añadirlo junto con el puerro.
Salpimentar las carrilleras y añadirlas cuando la cebolla empiece a coger tono, añadir la hoja de laurel si se quiere (yo no). Dorar la carne, al cabo de 5-10 min y añadir la 1/2 botella de vino, que deberá ser bueno pues el sabor de la salsa depende de ello (casi se cubren las carrilleras). 40 min de olla exprés. Las carrilleras deben quedar muy, muy tiernas. Tienen que deshacerse en la boca. Si veis que no están así, cocerlas durante más tiempo hasta que se ablanden. Las de la foto estuvieron cociendo 3 horas en puchero.

Clean the cheek thoroughly till there are no membranes left. Cut the onions, leak and pepper and fry lightly in some olive oil. Season the cheeks and add them to the vegetables. Add also the bay leaf if you want (I don't). Brown the meat for 5-7 minutes and add the wine. Wine must be good because the flavour of the sauce will depend on it. Cook for 40 minutes in a pressure cooker. The cheeks must be so tender that they'll melt in your mouth. Sometimes you must cook them longer; I cooked the ones in the picture for 3 hours!

Una vez cocidas, sacar las carrilleras, triturar la salsa y pasarla por un pasapurés. Si está clara, se puede añadir un poco de caramelo. Si está muy líquida, un poquito de gelatina para que quede más gelatinosa.

Once the meat is cooked, take it out of the cooker and grind the sauce with a blender. After that, strain it using a vegetable mill. If the sauce is too clear, you can make some syrup (simply brown some sugar) and add it. If it's too liquid, add a gelatine leaf.

Volver a meter las carrilleras en la salsa. Cortarlas sólo al servir porque, si no, se desmigajan.
Se pueden añadir patatas fritas o acompañar con patatas al horno encebolladas, al romero...

Add the cheeks to the sauce. Slice them only right before serving or they can crumble.
Sliced potatoes with onion or rosemary are a delicious complement.

LOBSTER SALAD WITH SAFFRON MAYONNAISE - ENSALADA DE BOGAVANTE Y MAYONESA AL AZAFRÁN

INGREDIENTES para 2 - INGREDIENTS for 2

- 1 bogavante mediano (unos 500 o 600 grs) - 1 mediun sized lobster (about 500 or 400 grs)
- Lechuga - Lettuce
- 1 tomate - 1 tomato
- Cebolleta (opcional) - Spring onion (optional)
- 1 patata pequeña - 1 small potato
- ½ aguacate - ½ avocado
- 1 champiñón mediano - 1 medium sized mushroom
- Sal - Salt
- Aceite de oliva virgen extra - Extra-virgin olive oil
- Vinagre - Vinegar

Para la mayonesa - For the mayonnaise:
- 1 huevo - 1 egg
- Aceite de girasol - Sunflower oil
- Vinagre - Vinegar
- Sal - Salt
- Algunas hebras de azafrán - Some saffron stigmas

¡¡Un bogavante vivo en casa!! ¡¡Qué divertido!! No tenemos animales así es que ya podéis imaginar el interés que suscitó nuestro pequeño invitado... Cuidado con las pinzas! Ésta ha sido nuestra cena porque, de vez en cuando, hay que darse un capricho. El bogavante estaba en su punto, delicioso.
A living lobster at home!! Great, great fun!! We don't have pets so you can imagine how exciting it was to have this little gust... Just be careful with its claws! This is what we had for dinner tonight and I could'nt wait to post it. Lobster was just perfect, delicious.

RECETA - RECIPE:
Hacer una mayonesa normal, añadirle unas hebras de azafrán y remover. La mayonesa no cogerá aún el color del azafrán. Cubrir y guardar una hora en el frigorífico. Transcurrido este tiempo, volver a remover y veréis cómo cambia de color (y de sabor).
Make a normal mayonnaise, add some saffron stigmas and stir. The mayonnaise's colour will not change straightaway. Cover it and keep it in the fridge for one hour. Then, stir again and now it will turn yellow and get the saffron's taste.

Para cocer el bogavante, hervir agua con sal. Se suele poner en el agua una hoja de laurel e incluso un poco de pimienta: yo no lo recomiendo, el sabor del bogavante se aprecia mejor sin nada de esto. Cuando el agua esté hirviendo, echar el bogavante, tapar y dejar cocer durante 7 minutos. Escurrir, dejar enfriar y pelar el bogavante con cuidado para que no se rompa la carne.
To cook the lobster, boil water with salt. People usually add a bay leaf and even some pepper but I advise you not to do that: you will appreciate the lobster's taste much better. When the water is boiling, put the lobster inside, cover the pot and cook for 7 minutes. Drain and let cool. Peel it off carefully.

Tiene mucho mejor aspecto cocido ¿no? - It looks much better now it's cooked!

Cocer la patata, dejar enfriar, pelar y cortar en rodajas. Pelar y cortar en rodajas el aguacate. Limpiar un cortar en láminas el champiñón. Reservar estos ingredientes.
Boil the potato, let it cool, peel and slice it. Peel the avocado and slice it. Clean and slice the mushroom. Set these ingredients aside.

Limpiar y trocear la lechuga, el tomate y la cebolleta. Ponerlos en un bol y aliñarlos con una vinagreta de aceite, vinagre y sal. Usar un molde para dale forma al colocarlo en el plato.
Clean and cut the lettuce, tomato and spring onion. Place them in a bowl and dress with some vinaigrette made with olive oil, vinegar and salt. Use a mould to shape, when you place this on the dish.

Disponer los demás ingredientes en el plato y rociar todo con la vinagreta. Yo prefiero servir la mayonesa en un pequeño bol para que cada uno aliñe a su gusto.
Arrange the other ingredients on the plate and sprinkle with some vinaigrette. I prefer serving the mayonnaise in a little bowl so each one can dress it their own way.

El viernes, los niños celebraron la fiesta del Carnaval en el colegio. Todos los años, los profesores hacen disfraces para los pequeños con una temática diferente. En esta ocasión, los profesores iban de granjeros y los niños eran diferentes animales de la granja en cada curso. Por supuesto, los niños colaboran haciendo las caretas, gorros, etc. Os pongo fotos de todos ellos porque no tienen desperdicio. Me parece maravilloso que, de una forma tan sencilla, hayan conseguido hacer unos disfraces tan buenos. ¡Podéis tomar ideas para el año que viene.

No os podéis imaginar la ilusión que me ha hecho saber que Marisol Pagola, creadora del blog Mama Cuentista (del que, por cierto, soy ávida lectora porque me siento totalmente identificada y me desternillo de risa) ha decidido dar un premio a 4 en la Carretera. Me cuesta creer que merezca ningún tipo de reconocimiento pero, sinceramente, estoy encantada de saber que lo que escribo y enseño pueda gustaros tanto como me gusta a mí lo que veo en otros blogs. En un año, 4 en la Carretera ha recibido 14.000 visitas lo me parece absolutamente increíble. Y debo decir que os estoy muy agradecida por vuestras visitas y comentarios frecuentes. Es un placer estar en contacto con personas que comparten mis aficiones: ¡Muchas gracias a todos!

Ahora, me toca seguir con la cadena de premios y el mío es para.... ¡Clara de Twins Outside! una mamá-cangura como yo con quien comparto mucho más que la creencia de que los portabebés son muy beneficiosos en la primera infancia. MONKFISH SKEWER WITH VINAIGRETTE - BROCHETAS DE RAPE CON VINAGRETA

Ingredientes para 2 / Ingredients for 2:

- 1 rape pequeño en filetes - 1 small monkfish, skinless and boneless (2 fillets)

(VERDURAS - VEGETABLES)
- Cebolla roja - Red onion
- Espárragos trigueros - Wild asparagus
- Calabacín - Courgette
- Pimiento verde - Green pepper
Podéis usar cualquier otra verdura. You can use any other vegetable you like.

(VINAGRETA - VINAIGRETTE)
- Zanahoria - Carrot
- Cebolla roja - Red onion
- Aceite de oliva - Olive oil
- Vinagre - Vinegar
- Sal - Salt

VINAGRETA - VINAIGRETTE:

Picar la zanahoria y la cebolla. Mezclar en un bol con aceite de oliva y un chorrito de vinagre. Añadir sal al gusto.

Chop up the carrot and onion. Mix them with olive oil and a splash of vinegar. Add salt.

Cortar las verduras en trozos medianos y cocerlas 2 minutos en el microondas con un poquito de agua. Cocerlas por separado. Cortar los filetes de rape en dados y montar las brochetas. Ponerlas a la parrilla o freírlas con muy poco aceite. Servir con la vinagreta.

Cut the vegetables in medium sized pieces and cook in the microwave for 2 minutes with a little water. Cook them separately. Cut monkfish fillets in pieces and skewer the ingredients. Grill them or fry using very little oil. Serve with vinaigrette.

TUTORIAL: KNIT SQUARE HAT WITH TASSELS - GORRO DE PUNTO CUADRADO CON FLECOS

A few weeks ago I found a very nice tutorial in Twoandsix blog. English speakers will find there all the information they need to knit this beautiful hat. However, I have made a couple of changes: I added a white crochet border, and 2-color tassels. I used 7 mm needles and an even bulkier yarn. Don't hesitate to post a comment if you have any questions; I'll do my best to help!

Hace un tiempo, vi un tutorial en el blog Twoandsix que me encantó. Yo he añadido un par de cambios a la versión original y voy a intentar explicaros cómo hacerlo en castellano.

He utilizado lana de grosor 9 y agujas del 7.

Para empezar, montamos 19 o 17 puntos (si la lana es más fina, montar más). Montarlos usando el método provisional, con aguja de ganchillo.

Vamos a tejer toda la pieza en punto liso: una fila del derecho y la siguiente del revés.

A partir de la segunda fila que tejemos del derecho, pasamos los 3 últimos puntos a la otra aguja sin tejerlos. A partir de ahora, cada vez que tejamos una fila del derecho repetiremos esto. Así, queda un reborde más grueso que no se enrosca sobre sí mismo y es el que "envolverá" la cara de los niños.

Seguimos tejiendo así hasta obtener una pieza de unos 40 o 38 cm (lo necesario para envolver en ella la cabeza del niño).

Unimos los dos extremos de la pieza tejiéndolos juntos. Primero, quitamos el hilo provisional y montamos los puntos en la segunda aguja. Aquí veréis cómo hacerlo.

Luego, los tejemos juntos con una aguja de punta roma tal y como se ve en este vídeo. Con este sistema, se evitan las costuras abultadas y ni se nota que se ha cosido, parece tejido en redondo.

Ahora, tenemos que cerrar la parte de arriba: colocamos la costura en el centro de la parte trasera (aunque casi ni se nota) y cerramos la parte superior del gorro cosiéndola.

Hacemos dos pompones de flecos y los colocamos en cada extremo. Mirad lo fácil que es. Con la aguja de ganchillo, hacemos un reborde en un color que contraste con la lana del gorro. ¡Y se acabó!

TUTORIAL: KNIT HAT FOR ADULT - GORRO TEJIDO PARA ADULTO

Hace mucho tiempo que no tejía nada y últimamente me ha dado por los gorros. Éste es para mi madre, hecho con mucho cariño para que se proteja del frío espantoso de estos días.

It's a long time since I last knitted a garment. This hat is for my mom; made with love to protect her from the cold winter weather.

PATRÓN / PATTERN:

Con aguja del 5.
I used 5mm needles.

Montar 72 puntos y hacer el elástico (2 derecho, dos revés) del tamaño deseado, empezando todas las filas igual, tanto al ir como al volver.
Cast on 72 stitches and make a Ribbing (knit 2 purl 2) the size you like.

Pasar a punto bobo. En la primera fila, hacer 6 puntos y comerse uno. Al final de esa fila, antes de los 6 últimos puntos, comerse otro punto para quedarnos sólo con 70.
Once you're done with the ribbing, switch to Garter stitch (knit all the time). In the first Garter row you must remove 2 stitches. To do this: knit 6 stitches and then knit two together. Knit 2 together again, 6 stitches before the end of row.

Seguir en punto bobo normal gasta que el total del gorro tejido (incluido el elástico mida unos 15 cm, 12 para niños).
Keep doing Garter stitch until the whole garment measures 15 cm (adults) or 12 cm (children).

CANDIED PEARS WITH CHOCOLATE - PERAS CONFITADAS CON CHOCOLATE

Ingredientes para 4 / Ingredients for 4:

- 4 peras / 4 pears
- ½ limón / ½ lemon juice
- 1 litro Agua / 1 liter water
- 200 gr de azúcar / 200 grams sugar
- Vainilla / vanilla
- Canela / cinnamon
- 125g de chocolate negro / 125 grams dark chocolate
- 30 ml de mantequilla / 30 ml butter
- 30 ml de nata espesa / 30 ml double cream

Es mejor usar peras que no estén muy maduras, más bien duras.
Pelar las peras dejando la cola y regarlas con el zumo de ½ limón.
En una cacerola, calentar a fuego suave el agua, con el azúcar, la canela y la vainilla abierta para que salgan las semillas. Añadir las peras y cocerlas suavemente durante 20 o 30 minutos hasta que se pongan transparentes. Dejar enfriar todo en la cacerola y, luego, meterlo en el frigorífico (con el almíbar y todo).
Sacar las peras del frigo 15 minutos antes de servir. Fundir el chocolate al baño María añadiendo la mantequilla y la nata. Añadirlo caliente a las peras.

Chose rather unripe, thick pears.
Peal the pears and pour the lemon juice on them.
Place a saucepan over a low heat with the water, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla (open it so that the seeds will come out). Add the pears and let them simmer for about 20 or 30 minutes till they become transparent. Let everything cool down in the saucepan and then keep it in the fridge (syrup and all).
Remember to take the pears out of the fridge 15 minutes before serving. Heat the chocolate in a bain-marie and mix with butter and cream. Cover the pears with the hot chocolate.

As a teenager, I started travelling to England in summer myself to practice English. I would spend hours in the libraries looking at these charming illustrations, and buying what I could afford. That's when fell in love for the second time.

Now that I am a grown adult and I don't need to travel to buy Beatrix Potter's last edited collection, I have fallen in love for the third time. Para el día de Navidad, cociné más de cien galletas de diferentes tipos y formas. Hice cookies de chocolate, shortbread y speculoos. Algunas las hemos regalado y otras nos las comemos en casa...
I cooked more than 100 biscuits for Christmas Day. I used different shapes and douhgs: chocolate chip cookies, shortbread and speculoos. We gave some of them to family and friends, but we eat the rest at home...

COOKIES:

Ingredientes:
1 taza mantequilla ablandada
1 taza azúcar blanco
1 taza azúcar moreno
2 huevos
2 cucharaditas extracto vainilla
3 tazas harina
1 cucharadita levadura
2 cucharadita agua caliente
1/2 cucharadita sal
2 tazas pepitas de chocolate
Instrucciones:
Precalentar el horno a 180ºC. Mezclar bien la mantequilla, el azúcar blanco, y el azúcar moreno hasta obtener una masa suave. Añadir y mezclar los huevos uno a uno y añadir la vainilla. disolver la levadura en el agua caliente, añadirla y mezclar junto con la sal. Por último se añaden la harina y las pepitas de chocolate, mezclando bien toda la masa. Sobre un papel para horno, ir colocando cucharadas de la mezcla, dejando una buena separación para que no se peguen cuando se inflen en el horno. Hornear durante unos 10 minutos en el horno precalentado, o hasta que los bordes se doren ligeramente.

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons hot water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. Dissolve baking soda in hot water. Add to batter along with salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts. Drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans. Bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

SHORTBREAD:

Ingredientes:
2 tazas (260 gramos) de harina
1/4 cucharadita (2 gramos) de sal
1 taza (226 gramos) de mantequilla a temperatura ambiente
1/2 taza (60 gramos) azúcar glas
1 cucharadita (4 gramos) de extracto puro de vainilla
Instrucciones:
En unbol, mezclar la harina con la sal. Reservar. Batir la mantequilla y el azúcar hasta que quede suave. Añadir el extracto de vainilla. Añadir poco a poco la mezcla de la harina. Dar forma redonda a la masa, cubrir con film y meter en el frigo, al menos, una hora. Precalentar el horno a 180ºC colocando la fuente en el centro. Extender la masa con un rodillo y cortarla con moldes. Colocar las galletas sobre el papel para horno y meterlo en el frigo durante unos 15 minutes. (Así quedarán más duras y mantendrán la forma al hornearlas). Hornear durante 8 - 10 minutos, o hasta que adquieran un color ligeramente dorado. Dejar enfriar en una parrilla metálica.

Ingredients:

Flatten the dough into a disk shape, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill the dough for at least an hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C) with the rack in the middle of the oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. On a lightly floured surface roll out the dough. Cut into rounds or other shapes using a lightly floured cookie cutter. Place on the prepared baking sheets and place in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes. (This will firm up the dough so the cookies will maintain their shape when baked.) Bake for 8 - 10 minutes, or until cookies are very lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.

Esto es lo último que he cosido y os aseguro que, esta vez, estoy orgullosa de verdad. Ja, ja, ¡casi ni me lo creo!. Si me hubieran dicho hace un año que yo iba a coser un día un vestido así me habría partido de risa. Por cierto, la chaqueta es comprada.
This dress is the last thing I have sewn an, I am really proud of this one. I can hardly believe it! One year ago, I wouldn't even have dreamt of doing something like this... By the way, I bought the jacket.

He utilizado el patrón Bailey de la casa Bonnie Blue Designs. Hace falta tener un poco de experiencia en costura a máquina y con el uso de patrones pero es bastante sencillo de hacer. Incluye varios modelos de cuellos, mangas, bolsillos, cierres...
I used the Bailey pattern from Bonnie Blue Designs. You need to have some experience with patterns and machine sewing, but it is quite simple to do. It includes several options for collars, cuffs, pockets, back plackets...

Yo decidí, utilizar el clásico cuello bebé. En la siguiente imagen se ve muy bien la tela: una micropana 100% algodón de la casa Liberty of London. Es muy agradable y fácil de trabajar.

I decided to do a Peter Pan collar. In the following image you can see pretty well the kind of fabric I used: 100% cotton baby corduroy, Liberty of London. It's got a very soft touch and is really nice to work with.

Le puse dos bolsillos delanteros para darle más gracia.
I added two front pockets.

TUTORIAL: NIGHTDRESS AND LEGGINGS - CAMISÓN Y LEGGINGS

Para el camisón he utilizado un patrón de camisetas y lo he alargado un poco por abajo. El patrón es el de Kwik Sew nº 3149.

To sew the nightdress, I used a T-shirt pattern and simply made it a bit longer. The patter is Kwik Sew No. 3149

La tela utilizada es de tipo camiseta, 100% algodón y tiene elasticidad. Para hacer los leggings, necesitamos tener unos como referencia. Los colocamos doblados por la mitad sobre la tela que, a su vez, estará doblada en dos.

The fabric is 100% cotton knit, pretty elastic. To sew the leggings, you need to have a pair of leggings at home that you will use as a reference. Place the fabric on fold and, then, put your leggings on it, folded as shown in the picture.

Con un bolígrafo que se borra, dibujamos la forma y la recortamos. Repetimos la operación para obtener dos piezas iguales.

Use a disappearing-ink-pen to draw the shape and cut it. Do it again in order to have 2 identical pieces.

Colocamos las dos piezas, una sobre la otra, con las caras buenas tocándose y cosemos sólo la parte superior del pantalón, tal y como se indica en la imagen 1. Recolocamos las telas para obtener la forma de los leggings, tal y como se ve en la imagen 2 , y cosemos la cara interna de las piernas, como indica la línea discontinua.

Place one piece on top of the other, right faces inward, and sew only the top half of the leggings, as shown by the dotted line on image 1. Rearrange the fabric as shown in image 2 and sew the inner seam of the legs, as indicated by the dotted line.

Doblamos la parte superior para hacer la cintura. La cosemos dejando una abertura que nos permita, luego, introducir una goma. Cosemos los extremos de la goma y cerramos la cintura.

You want to work on the waist now. Fold it inward and sew leaving an opening that will allow you to place the elastic band. Sew the edges of the band together and close the opening.

Un día tendréis que tomar vuestras propias decisiones. Algunas serán fáciles y claras, otras complicadas e inciertas. En ocasiones, al abrir una puerta, comprobaréis que otra se cierra. Unas veces acertaréis, otras no, como todo el mundo. Pero si decidís con el corazón, nunca tendréis que arrepentiros.
Entretanto, tenéis todo por vivir, todas las puertas abiertas, todos los caminos por delante. Aún sois libres de ir... donde os lleven vuestros pies.

ST. NICHOLAS SPECULOOS - SPECULOOS DE SAN NICOLAS

Esta tarde, San Nicolás ha llegado al colegio de mis niños para traerles chocolatinas, mandarinas y nueces. Todo un acontecimiento. En España no celebramos el día de San Nicolás pero en algunos países de Europa como Bélgica, Holanda y Alemania es el día que todos los niños esperan: viene a ser como nuestros Reyes Magos. Este video es del colegio de mis hijos (Deutshe Schule San Alejandro Magno, San Sebastián):
This afternoon, St. Nicholas came to my children's school and gave them chocolates, clementines and nuts. I's quite an event... We do not celebrate St. Nicholas day in Spain but in some countries like Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands it's a very important celebration for children: more or less like The Three Wise Men for us. This is a video I found of my children's school (Deutshe Schule San Alejandro Magno, San Sebastián):

Me suele gustar acompañar desde casa las tradiciones que aprenden en el colegio y, esta vez he hecho unos speculoos. Son unas galletas típicas de Bélgica y Holanda que se preparan para esta fecha tan señalada y están buenísimas. El único problema para cocinarlas es encontrar la cassonade, un tipo de azúcar moreno especial que sólo se encuentra allí.
I like to enhance at home the traditions they learn at school and, this time, I have cooked some speculoos. These are Belgian/Dutch traditional cookies and are delicious. The only difficulty is finding the cassonade, a particular kind of brown sugar quite difficult to get here.

Ingredientes -- Ingredients:

- 400 grs de harina - 400 grs flour
- 250 grs de cassonade (morena) - 250 grs cassonade (brown)
- 250 grs de mantequilla ablandada (no margarina) - 250 grs soft real butter (not margarine)
- una cucharita de café de canela molida - 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 huevo - 1 egg
- una pizca de nuez moscada, clavo - one pinch nutmeg and clove
- 50 grs almendras naturales ralladas - 50 grs grated almonds
- 5 grs de levadura - 5 grs baking powder
- una pizca de sal - one pinch of salt

Mezclar en un bol la harina, la cassonade, la levadura, las almendras la canela la nuez moscada, el clavo y la sal.

Mix in a bowl the flour, the cassonade, the baking powder, the grated almonds, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and salt.

Añadir el huevo batido y la mantequilla en trocitos, y amasar todo bien.

Add the egg and butter in small pieces and knead the dough by hand.

Guardar la masa en el frigo unas horas, o toda la noche, cubierta con film.

Then put it in the fridge for a few hours or even overnight. Cover it with clingfilm.

Estirar la masa con un rodillo y darle la forma deseada.

Roll out the dough and use moulds to shape de cookies.

Meter en el horno precalentado a 200º durante 10 minutos.

Bake for 10 minutes in a preheated oven at 200º.

Puedes hacer unos paquetitos y regalarlas a la familia y amigos. Mi hijo le ha regalado una a San Nicolás en el colegio... O colgarlas del árbol de Navidad. Cuando se enfríen, quedarán duras pero se reblancerán si las guardas en un bote. Puedes guarlarlas unas semanas: seguro que no tienen tiempo de ponerse malas!

You can wrap them and give them to friends and relatives. My son gave one to St. Nicholas at school... Or use them to decorate your Christmas tree.They will be hard after cooling down but if you store them in a tin they should get softer. You could keep them for weeks but I bet they won't have the time to get bad!

Kidy Froh, es una empresa española con sede en el País Vasco pionera en seguridad infantil. Gracias a mi trabajo como intérprete, he podido conocerla de primera mano y he escuchado las explicaciones de su fundador: puedo deciros que su creatividad e iniciativa son asombrosas.

Kidy Froh, is a Spanish company from the Basque Country, leader in child safety. Thanks to my job as an interpreter, I have had the chance to know what they do first hand and it is amazing.

Pero, sobre todo, escribo esta entrada porque los productos que han diseñado y patentado me han parecido de lo más interesantes. Les ha llevado mucho tiempo e innumerables pruebas desarrollarlos cumpliendo la normativa y responden a necesidades para las cuales aún no había respuesta en el mercado. Como madre de dos niños pequeños, estoy muy agradecida porque, como veréis, algunas de sus invenciones son totalmente necesarias.
I am writing this entry because the products they have designed and registered are really interesting. It's taken a long time and lots of tests to develop the products according to the European standards and now they fill a few gaps in the market. As a mother, I am thankful because some of their designs are absolutely necessary.

El producto que más me ha gustado es Kidy Bus, un sistema de retención para los niños que viajan en autobús. Es el primer (y único) sistema homologado de Europa que se quita y se pone rápidamente, y es muy fácil de guardar cuando no se usa.

It's been a resounding success and the waiting list is long. They receive many orders from Northern Europe countries. In Spain we are "slower" but some schools are already installing Kidy Bus systems, under parents' request.

MARIA'S HOME-MADE PIZZA -- PIZZA CASERA DE MARÍA

Esta receta para hacer la masa de la pizza casera es de mi amiga María (corrijo: la receta es de su padre, que es un cocinero fantástico), que vino el viernes a cocinar a mi casa con sus dos niños. Nos hemos propuesto ir preparando a la futura generación de grandes chefs... Les pusimos el pijama para que pudieran irse a dormir directamente después de la cena y nos pusimos manos a la obra. Lo primero, lavarse las manos.
This recipe is not mine; it's my friend Maria's (correction: it's her father's recipe. He's a stunning cook). Friday evening, she came over with her lovely children for dinner. We have decided to prepare the new generation of chefs!... We put them their pyjamas so they could go straight to bed after dinner if they were tired, and we got started. First of all, everybody wash your hands!.

Ingredientes para la masa / Ingredients for the dough:

- 250 grs de harina preparada con levadura para pizza (o harina y una pizca de levadura)
- 250 grs special pizza flour with yeast (or simply flour with a pinch of yeast)
- Un chorro de aceite de oliva virgen extra   - A splash of extra virgin olive oil
- Sal   - Salt
- Un chorro de agua    - A splash of water

Ingredientes para la salsa / Ingredients for the sauce:
-Tomate triturado    - Natural tomato sauce
- Una cucharadita de aceite de oliva virgen extra    - 1 tsp extra virgin olive oil
- Orégano    - Origan
- Pimienta    - Peper

Por encima / Toppings:
- Queso mozzarella    - Mozzarella cheese
- Queso rallado Emmental   - Emmental grated cheese
- Calabacín, jamón, berenjena, champiñones... tú eliges.
- Courgette, ham, egg plant, mushrooms... you choose.

En un bol, incorporar la harina con levadura, el aceite de oliva, la sal y el agua.
In a bowl, place the flour with yeast and add the olive oil, salt and water.

Mezclar hasta obtener una textura como la de la imagen.
Mix till it looks like in the picture.

Ir añadiendo agua poco a poco y mezclar a mano.
Slowly, add some more water as required and mix into a paste by hand.

La idea es llegar a tener una masa como ésta, que cubriremos con un trapo y dejaremos reposar 15 o 20 minutos.
You should get a dough like the one in the picture below, which you will cover with a cloth and let it stand for 15 to 20 minutes.

Enharinar la superficie de trabajo e ir extendiendo la masa con ayuda de un rodillo, dándole la forma deseada.
Dust the worktop with flour and roll out the dough.

Colocar la masa en una fuente de horno previamente enharinada y pincharla suavemente con un tenedor por toda su superficie.
Place the dough on a baking tray dusted with flour and prick it with a fork.

Añadir la salsa de tomate con todos sus ingredientes y extenderla sobre la masa.
Add the tomato sauce with all its ingredients and spread it over the dough.

Añadir la mozzarella, los ingredientes elegidos y, por último el queso rallado emmental.
Add the mozzarella cheese, the toppings and, finally the emmental cheese.

Hornear en un horno precalentado a 200ºC hasta que la masa se vea dorada. ¡Quedó muy buena!
Bake in a preheated oven at 200ºC until the dough browns. It was very tasty!

Acabamos de celebrar la fiesta de San Martín al más puro estilo alemán (mis hijos van al colegio alemán). En España, esta entrañable fiesta infantil es bastante desconocida y nosotros no la celebramos pero quiero enseñaros cómo es porque me parece una de las fiestas para niños más bonitas que conozco y ellos la viven con mucha ilusión. Además de Alemania, se celebra también en Austria, Bélgica y Holanda.

We have just celebrated St. Martin the German way (my children attend a German school). The feast of St. Martin is practically unknown in Spain and we do not celebrate it but I want to show you how it is because, in my opinion, it is one of the most beautiful feasts for children, and mine really love it. I have read that, besides Germany, this tradition exists also in Austria and some parts of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Básicamente, los niños elaboran sus propios farolillos (laternen) en el colegio y el 11 de noviembre a las 19:00h salimos todos por las calles cercanas al colegio, con los farolillos encendidos y cantando las canciones típicas detrás de San Martín, que va a caballo. Al regresar al cole, el Santo les da a todos bollitos de leche. A mis hijos les emociona esta fiesta: no sé si es por la satisfacción de haber hecho ellos mismos los farolillos, o por juntarse con sus amigos de clase en la oscuridad de la noche, o por la magia de las velas... Pero la verdad es que a mí me lo contagian.

Basically, children make their beautiful lanterns (laternen) themselves in class and the 11th November at 7 p.m. we all go through the streets near the school, with the candles lit and singing the typical songs behind St. Martin, who rides his horse. Back at school, the Saint gives the children soft bread rolls. My children always get very excited: I don't know if it is the fact that they're so pleased they managed to make the lanterns themselves, or the fact of meeting their friends at night, or the magic of all these candlelights glowing in the darkness... But I must admit that they pass it on to me.

Elaborar los farolillos es muy sencillo: se necesita una caja de quesitos en porciones para la base. Alrededor se pega un papel cebolla (que transparente) previamente decorado con pegatinas, pinturas, cartulinas... En la parte de arriba, se engancha un alambre y se utiliza un palo con un gancho para sujetarlo sin quemarse. Se pone una velita y listo. Yo pienso que son una manualidad muy bonita para Halloween, Noche Vieja... ¡o para un día cualquiera!

Making the lanterns is very easy: you need a cheese wedge round box for the base. Wrap some decorated onionskin paper around it. You can paint it or use stickers... etc. On top of it, hook some wire and use a stick to hold it without burning your hands. Insert a candle and get ready to sing!. Even if you don't celebrate St. Martin, I think this is a very nice handcraft for Halloween, New Year's Eve... or any day!

CRAWFISH AND ASPARAGUS SALAD - ENSALADA DE CIGALAS Y TRIGUEROS

Esta receta es muy sencilla y tiene mucho éxito. Sé que algunos teníais ganas de que la pusiera: pues aquí está, por fin... Espero que la hagáis y que os guste.
This recipe is very easy to do and usually very successful. Some of you were eagerly waiting for it. Well, here it is, at last... I hope you'll enjoy cooking and eating.

Ingredientes / Ingredients:

- 6 espárragos por persona - About 6 asparagus p/person
- 4 cigalas por persona (medianas o grandes) - 4 crawfish p/person (medium or large)
- Aguacate - Avocado
- Tomates - Tomatoes
- Cebolleta - Spring onion
- Brotes de ensalada variada - Mixed salad sprouts
- Aceite de oliva virgen extra - Extra virgin olive oil
- Vinagre de módena - Modena vinegar
- Sal - Salt
- Sal Maldon - Maldon salt
- Limón, bálsamo de Módena y mostaza en grano (opcional) - Lemon, thick Modena balsam and wholegrain mustard (optional)

Limpiar bien los espárragos y cortar el tallo, guardando sólo las puntas más tiernas. Cocerlos al vapor. Para ello, se puede utilizar una vaporera o un microondas. En este caso, ponemos los espárragos en un plato hondo con un poco de agua en el fondo. Lo cubrimos con un papel film en el que hacemos unos pocos agujeros y lo metemos en el microondas unos 7 minutos a máxima potencia. Antes de sacar el plato, dejar enfriar porque quemará mucho.

Wash the asparagus thoroughly and cut out the hard ends keeping only the tender tips. Steam them in a steamer or in the microwave, for which you will put them in a dish with a little bit of water. Cover it all with some cling film in which you make a few holes. Cook in the microwave for about 7 minutes on High. Let it cool down before you take the dish out of the microwave.

Las cigalas deberán ser medianas o grandes. Las pequeñas son buenas para cocerlas sin pelar pero no para pelarlas y asarlas después. Quizás, no haga falta decirlo pero es muy importante que el marisco y el pescado sean muy, muy frescos, a poder ser pescados el mismo día.

Crawfishes must be medium or large. Small ones are good for boiling with the shell but not so much if you want to peel them first and grill them afterwards. You'll probably think that what I am going to say is obvious but always make sure the seafood and fish you buy are very, very fresh. Better if fished that same day.

Pelamos las cigalas: separamos la cabeza y quitamos los 2 primeros aros del caparazón (ver flecha en la foto). Luego, será más fácil quitar el resto del caparazón. Hacerlo con cuidado para que no se rompan.

This is how you peel the crawfish: first, you remove the head, then you take the first two rings off the tail (see the arrow). After that, it should be quite easy to peel the rest carefully because you don't want to tear them.

La cabeza y las cáscaras pueden usarse para hacer un fumet, congelarlo y utilizarlo en otra ocasión para arroces, pescados en salsa, sopa de pescado...etc. Guardar las cigalas peladas en el frigo.
You can use the heads and shells to make a stock, freeze it, and use it later for another recipe (rice, fish...). Keep the peeled crawfish in the fridge.

Picar bien los tomates, un poco de cebolleta, el aguacate y, si se quiere, añadir al aguacate unas pocas gotas de zumo de limón para que no se oscurezca. Usar muy poco limón (se puede rebajar con agua) porque suele enmascarar los demás sabores y es una pena.

Chop the tomatoes, a little bit of fresh onion if you want and the avocado. You can add a few drops of lemon juice to the avocado so that it will not darken due to oxidation, but remember to use only a few drops (you can add some water) because lemon can easily "hide" the other flavors and I think it's a shame.

Picar toscamente los brotes de ensalada, tal y como se ve en la imagen. No es necesario picarlos mucho.

Coarsely chop the salad sprouts, as shown in the picture. You don't need to mince them.

Mezclar todas las verduras (salvo los espárragos) en una ensaladera, sazonar con sal, aceite de oliva y vinagre de Módena. Si se desea, añadir un poco de mostaza en grano. Sobre cada plato, colocamos un molde circular en el que introduciremos la ensalada, aplastándola un poco para que coja forma. Al servir, se retira el molde.

Mix all the vegetables (safe the asparagus) in a salad bowl, season with salt, extra virgin olive oil and Modena vinegar. You can also add some wholegrain mustard. Place a ring mold on each plate. Fill it with salad and press slightly. Then, remove the mold.

En una plancha o sartén antiadherente bien caliente, doramos los espárragos, añadiéndoles un poco de sal Maldon. Hay que tener cuidado y moverlos dejándolos muy poco tiempo porque enseguida se queman. Cuando estén listos, los colocamos en el plato donde ya tenemos la ensalada, rociándolos con unas gotas de vinagre de Módena. también se puede decorar el plato con unas líneas de bálsamo de Módena pero a mí, personalmente, no me gusta mucho el sabor...

Heat a nonstick frying pan and brown the asparagus in it, adding some Maldon salt. You don't need to use oil. Be careful, they can easily get burnt. Place them on the plate and spray them with some drops of Modena vinegar. Or you can decorate the plate with some lines of thick Modena balsam, but I don't like the taste of it myself...

Al mismo tiempo, en otra sartén o plancha bien caliente, asamos las colas de cigala sazonándolas también con sal Maldón. Un minuto y medio será más que suficiente.

At the same time, on another hot nonstick frying pan, roast the crawfish tails seasoning with Maldon salt. Again, you don't need to use oil. One minute and a half should be enough.

Las añadimos al resto de los ingredientes y servimos de inmediato para que no se enfríe.

Place them on the plate and serve immediately.

CHOCO-CEREAL LOLLIPOPS - CHUPA CHUPS DE CHOCOCEREALES

Hoy, os presento una receta infantil, fácil y divertida. Lo mejor es que los niños pueden participar y se lo pasan genial. Mi consejo: si podéis, instalaros fuera de casa porque pueden manchar mucho... Y, sobre todo, disfrutad con ellos!.
Today I'm posting a very easy recipe for children. They love to help and then eat the result. My advice: if you can, settle everything outdoors, chocolate can be so dirty when cooked by children... And, above all, enjoy the process with them!

INGREDIENTES              INGREDIENTS:

- Chocolate para fundir     - Cooking chocolate
- Cereales                        - Cereals
- Bolitas de colores           - Toppings
- Palitos de brocheta         - Small brochette sticks
- Papel sulfurado              - Parchment paper

Funde el chocolate al baño maría o en el microondas con cuidado de que no se queme.
Melt the chocolate in a bain Marie or in the microwave, being careful not to burn it.

Añade los cereales (no demasiados) y mezclalos bien.
Add the cereals (not too many) and mix to make a paste.

En un plato o bandeja, coloca un papel sulfurizado y dispón los palillos dejando suficiente espacio entre ellos para, luego, colocar una bola de chocolate con cereales.
Put a parchment paper on a wide plate o tray, and place the sticks leaving enough space between them for the lollipop balls.

Con 2 cucharillas, haz las bolitas y pínchalas en los palillos. Con niños pequeños, olvídate de las 2 cucharillas. Mejor, déjales que hagan una bolita con las manos, que se ensucien bien y que se la coman ellos mismos después...
Use 2 teaspoons to make the lollipop balls and skewer them. If your children are very young don't try to have them use the spoons. Simply let them make one ball using their hands, get dirty and eat it themselves afterwards...

Puedes decorarlos con bolitas de colores, coco rallado, frutos secos triturados. Tú eliges. Es aconsejable dejarlos unas horas en el frigorífico. Si los envuelves en papel de celofán con un lazo, pueden convertirse en una idea perfecta que tus hijos los regalen a sus amigos el día de su cumpleaños.
You can add some toppings to make them more colorful. Leave them in the fridge for a few hours. Wrap them in cellophane paper and your children will be able to give them to their friends on their birthday!

SAN SEBASTIÁN 2010. TORMENTA - THE STORM

Yesterday, we were supposed to have a terrible weather with violent wind and huge waves. And I was supposed to finally take the picture of one of these enormous waves that drag the cars into the sea and destroy some of our parapets every once in a while. But none of this happened...
There was only a ridiculous storm. Nothing to make a fuss of. But my camera and I took a little walk and, although I didn't find what I was looking for, the pictures turned out quite nice. The Comb of the Wind looks amazing in windy days and it was very funny: the old game of dodging the waves, as when I was a child. I never get tired of this place.

Ayer habían previsto un gran temporal en nuestra costa y yo me las prometía muy felices pensando que, por fin, iba a poder "cazar" una foto de esas olas gigantescas que suelen arrastrar coches y destrozar pretiles.
Pues no. Tuvimos un temporalito de nada pero mi cámara y yo aprovechamos para dar un paseo por la ciudad y, aunque no conseguí lo que quería, las fotos son bonitas. En días como ayer, El Peine del Viento cobra todo su sentido. Fue muy divertido: el viejo juego de esquivar las olas, como cuando era una niña. Es un lugar maravilloso al que no me canso de volver.
